Cable Systems
Cable systems for the brakes and shifters include the cables, housings, straddle cables,
cable carriers, cable hangers, ferrules, barrel adjusters, cable guides, cable
bosses, and other associated hardware.
Not all cables are made the same. There are sealed systems, stainless,
slick stainless, coated stainless, galvanized, coated galvanized, many different
diameters, weaves, and alloys. Until recently there were only metal cables.
Fiber cables have made an appearance to much fanfare
but diligent mechanics have had no problem with well-maintained traditional systems.
The main claim-to-fame is the lighter weight...many bikes are already light enough
and metal cables have yet to show a downside, just what exactly is the benefit?
The exorbitant cost? the uber factor? the problems and persnickety nature of
installation and long-term viability?
Cable housings are different for brakes and shifters and cannot be interchanged.
