Updates

WARNING - someone is using my business, reputation, and likeness without my authorization, approval, or permission to market their transport services. limited skills and knowledge combined with questionable experience are inappropriate and troublesome traits for mechanics to have at this level of competition. racers of this caliber should not be exposed to such unknowns. ensure your mechanic has ample race experience, suitable insurance, vast knowledge, and the means to support all your mechanical needs: replacement parts, tools, resources, etc. i will happily clarify what should be expected and reasonably demanded from a professional mechanic.

1/7/12 - it appears there are a few more jerseys heading back this way. dylan mcnicholas grabbed the 30-34 age group and brian wilichoski took the 35-39 age group. a notable podium was adam myerson in the 40-44 age group for a bronze.

1/6/12 - congratulations to the next round of podium finishers using the transport: andrea smith in the 30-34 female age group as the new national champion and crystal anthony for the silver in the same, both from ladies first racing; peter goguen of team CF for the silver in the 15-16 male age group. also not to be discounted bringing back the jerseys to new england are austin vincent in the male 15-16 age group and paul curley with another national championship to add to his, like, 32,768 already.

1/5/12 - power washers is up and running, porta-potties on site, tents set up, a slice of new england is ready to rock! this is the best set-up we could possibly have and thanks to the excellent weather, no need for heated tents! of course all the mud has put a serious srain on the little power washer i brought as it serves as the sole unit for the entire encampment, basically running all day long as it cleans the mud from these fine bicycles...and 3,000 pounds of salt they dumped on the race course to break up the icy sections.

1/4/12 - congratulations to the first podium finisher using the transport, lori cooke, who got 1st place in the women's open (non-championship) race today. let's hope her skills allow her to do the same for her national and world championship races!

1/3/12 - arrived in madison today after 1250 miles and way too many tolls in the chicago area. for real, that much to drive over a friggin' bridge?! anyway, we are comfortably set up at 6861 cross country road, the house immediately next to the entrance to the park, even closer than most parking provided by the venue. we've even mowed a special path directly to my work area from the venue location! look for the mini-tent city with my dirty trailer and even dirtier car next to the house in the yard - not in back - and come see me for repairs or other information. ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING but feel free to drop your riders off here and bring your bikes by for some emergency repair work.

12/18/11 - STANDARD PRICING UNTIL DEADLINE, NO PRICE INCREASE!

11/18/11 - SUPER HUGE!!!   we said we'd take care of you and thanks to the generous financial and logistic support from BikeReg, there are no BikeReg registration fees for anyone! octuple thanks many times over. REGISTER HERE!

11/16/11 - working on getting a MASSIVE heated tent in madison and perhaps louisville venues. it'll be heated (thanks, captain obvious, for the reclarification), have a private changing room for before/after your training, maybe some light refreshments or snacks, and enough room to lounge around and hang out. once we get a price we'll offer the choice to the transportees. it won't be included in the base price but with ron's fine negotiating skills and everyone's participation, it may be a nobrainer for under $30 per person. and it will be "members only". with an average january temperature of 8 degrees in madison - louisville can be just as unforgiving - it will be a luxurious respite from the harsh elements!

11/13/11 - a few changes for your convenience and to reduce some costs

  1. overnight storage fees during transport may be eliminated depending on your needs:
    • FREE in the locked trailer
    • $10 for hotel room storage
  2. free pre-event storage date begins on 12/17/2011 instead of 12/27/2011
  3. free post-event storage date extended to 1/31/2012 from 1/22/2012
  4. storage before 12/17/2011 or after 1/31/2012 reduced from $10/day per bike to $5/day per bike
  5. normal pricing deadline extended for the madison transport from 12/1/2011 to 12/15/2011
  6. normal pricing deadline extended for the louisville transport from 12/8/2011 to 12/15/2011

11/11/11 - the first family of cyclocross, the Goguens, and Team CF New England have joined forces with BSM to provide the most exceptional and inclusive transport and mechanical services for new england racers! our goal is to make your experiences at cyclocross nationals or cyclocross masters' worlds more of a relaxing vacation atmosphere than a stressful work environment.

Transport Packages

the goal is to create several inclusive packages that take the doorstep to race concept and blow it wide open, essentially a tour-type package with one price for everything: travel, transportation, hotel, maybe food, full mechanical support, heated tent and "lounge" area at the venue, the whole nine yards. you make one phone call and it's done, now you can focus on the race and enjoy extra leisure time. walk onto the plane with the clothes on your back, the journey will be a cakewalk instead of a cavity search.

for now, here are two viable offerings. very VERY limited availability. still fine-tuning the idea but here's a sampling:

* - oh geez, what's with all the small print? it's a good thing. we want everyone to be able to take advantage of the GROUP pricing so we will work with you to help find a GROUP if you are solo or short on the numbers. select a GROUP leader and choose a GROUP name. the GROUP leader will have to approve each person who registers in the GROUP but the GROUP leader gets no special privileges or treatment otherwise, it is only a way to identify the GROUP and have a certain amount of control over who registers under your GROUP. a GROUP doesn't have to register all at once, add people as you find them. when the total number of registered bikes reaches the pre-defined number the voucher kicks in. register two bikes in a GROUP, it counts as two registrations. every bike in the GROUP and bikes that are added to the GROUP until the cutoff time each would get a voucher of said value when the pre-defined number is reached. the super voucher, if attained, is limited to one per GROUP and will be randomly drawn. if the super voucher is reached, each bike still gets the regular voucher so someone's bike might get transported for free, or split it amongst your group as the winner desires! vouchers are good for the following, provided there is enough remaining value to pay for the selected service and the service is available: storage, any labor, cleaning, insurance, pit service, loaner parts use, bike delivery/pick-up. vouchers are not good for parts or hard good purchases and they are not good for any other services except those specifically listed and only during the trip. just so you don't feel f*cked over by the stupidity of vouchers and all the restrictions that normally accompany them, redeem any unused portion of the voucher after the trip - the remaining value will be refunded to the bearer until 1/22/2012 at 9pm EST. miss that deadline and the voucher is void and worthless. you may trade, sell, donate, or otherwise transfer vouchers freely amongst your defined GROUP, give all the vouchers to one person, it's all good. however, no vouchers may be used for bikes/people that aren't in your GROUP, even if they are in another GROUP. bike must be registered with the GROUP name when the reservation is made, no changes after the fact. you are encouraged to get people in your GROUP that are going to the same location but it isn't required. any combination of single transport bike reservations made under a GROUP will make the bikes eligible provided they meet the guidelines (i.e. 13 to madison, 12 to louisville, all unique, would be 25 bikes in that GROUP). double transport bike reservations count as one bike but there are less double transports required to secure the voucher. no double vouchers will be issued for the same trip for the same bike. you can register in two separate GROUPS, even ten if you want, but each GROUP registration must include a unique bike. a bike cannot be in two GROUPS simultaneously nor can a bike in a double transport utilize one GROUP for the first part and another GROUP for the second part.

the fine print: there may be a special bonus for the GROUP with the most bikes or participants, no sense in going to a race without some friendly competition off the course, too.... :-)

Additional Services

  1. a bicycle must be transported to receive any of the pricing or services below. other people would pay higher prices.
  2. pricing is only good for the transport period, normal pricing before and after the transport period.
  3. the following services are not guaranteed and/or may be restricted. every effort will be made to accommodate everyone's needs but the primary focus is getting everything to the location on time. when that goal has been accomplished these service items may become available. there will be some repair time even if it means midnight hours. not so sure about being at your beckon call every minute of the day.
  4. bribery with good food and drink may be a suitable substitute for cash, it never hurts to ask. the saying is "gas, ass, grass, or cash. no one rides for free." oops, that's the hitchhiker's credo, nevermind.

Storage - three choices depending on your needs

  • $10 - per instance per bike or equipment during the transport for people desiring storage inside my hotel room instead of being locked in the trailer
  • FREE - there is no charge for storage if you are OK with the bike or equipment remaining locked in the trailer overnight either at the race venue or at my hotel. however, you accept all risks associated with such equipment storage, i am not responsible for its safety.
  • $5 - per day per bike or equipment before 12/17/2011 or after 2/1/2012
  • storage does not include insurance unless you already purchased insurance
  • no wet or dirty bikes or equipment, clean them or pay for cleaning, this is not your choice

Professional Cleaning

  • $15 to $30 - per instance per bike
  • $7 - per instance per wheelset

Check-over / Tune-up

  • $40 - per instance per bike
  • includes basic cleaning and inspection

Repairs and general labor

  • discounted from normal rates during the transport period only
  • certain service items may not available
  • see this list for available services and discounts

Loaner parts - $10 and up for temporary use, deposit may be required

  • $10 - pickup charge per bike
  • $1 - per mile PLUS tolls, parking, etc.
  • group discount may be available
  • to ease the burden of dealing with your bike at the hotel, in a car, etc.

Dedicated pit service for your race

  • $45 - per person per race, exceptionally strict availability
  • this is the real deal, you'll be treated like a world champion!
  • you will have the most experienced neutral support 'cross mechanic at your disposal.
  • please make sure your bike(s) are up to snuff. i won't be responsible or scapegoated for someone's bad mechanic. pay for a tune-up if it means that much. when you have trained an entire year and invested thousands of dollars for this race alone, think of the potential loss if something sinisterly stupid should happen.

Insurance Information

here are some insurance rates from several of the major shipping, airline, train, and other transport companies as of 10/18/2011. examples given are based on a $5,000 bike. the chart doesn't list all the restrictions, limitations, and the fine print but enough to know what's up. after studying their policies and the fine print, my policy is among the most inclusive. therefore the prices reflect the cost of insurance ONLY for a round trip shipment with some basic notes. of course add another $200 or so for the actual shipping and virtually all of them require the bike to be disassembled and packed, another $200 per bike round trip at your favorite store:

Insurance Rates for Various Transport Methods
ENTITYPRICING TOTAL IMPORTANT NOTES
shipper 1$0.75 per $100 value$75insurable value may be unfairly restricted
shipper 2??????like pulling teeth, no one uses them anyway
shipper 3$0.75 per $100 value$75major restrictions, inconvenience - possibly $1,000 limit
shipper 4$1.70 per $100 value$170not really set-up for large packages
shipper 4special$43significant other charges may apply
airline 1$2 per $100 value$200loss only, no damage; $5,000 limit per passenger
other airlinesn/an/ayou're screwed, can't find any information
"friend's" transport ??????you're SUPER screwed
pro transport 1 $6 per $1,000 value$24 *damage only, no loss, major restrictions; triathlons only
pro transport 2 n/an/ayou're screwed but they only do select triathlons
train$0.50 per $100$20 **$500 coverage included but $2,500 limit, you're screwed
ME$30 + $6 per $1,000 value$48 ***$2,000 base coverage provided for $30 fee;
NO DISASSEMBLY REQUIRED

* base coverage of $1000 for free then $6 per additional $1,000 value so $24 is correct
** base coverage of $500 for free then $0.50 per additional $100 value so $20 is correct BUT NOT ENOUGH INSURANCE!
*** base coverage of $2000 in enrollment fee then $6 per additional $1,000 value so $48 is correct

insurance offered through BSM is only in effect while BSM is in direct control and physical possession of the equipment. it does not cover damage or loss when the equipment is not in direct control and possession of BSM. some examples of non-covered losses include but are not limited to: breaking your bike in the race, damaged in your hotel room, run over by a car in the parking lot, stolen from the pit, awaiting pickup at a bike shop or delivery by a friend, damaged in shipping.

insurance is legitimate and provided through my business insurance policy, it is not self-insured. it wasn't cheap or easy to be able to provide such coverage. please read the limitations and restrictions prior to making a decision.

there's always paperwork for insurance. those who purchase optional insurance must document their equipment. please clearly and completely describe your equipment. i can provide a form for your convenience. some details to consider regarding your insurance needs:

  1. if you elect to purchase the optional insurance, your signature and payment indicate you agree to the limitations and restrictions listed in the contracts and supplemented by this website.
  2. insurance is for catastrophic loss and damage. a $100 deductible applies and contents are ultimately insured for 75% replacement value. any valuations must be supported with current MSRP or other certified literature. these restrictions allow enough wiggle room to return your equipment to the exact condition with my purchasing power.
  3. no double coverage - if you have specific homeowner's or other private insurance, you are forbidden to purchase insurance through me, it is a violation of the terms of insurance and the contract. there will be no double coverage repairs for any situation. don't hoard the insurance, let someone else get insurance who doesn't have it. this does not apply to the base coverage that your existing policy offers; you may insure your equipment for additional value if your existing policy has a pre-set limit that doesn't reflect the true value of your equipment.
  4. any existing insurance coverage must be used before BSM insurance.
  5. total insurance limit will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  6. claims will be limited to the actual dollar amount of insurance and only for replacing or repairing the loss. no incidental or consequential losses will be paid.
  7. cosmetic damage including but not limited to scratches, nicks, rub marks, discoloration, small dents, etc. will not be honored and are not covered except when repairs exceed 50% of the equipment’s value or have structurally impaired the equipment.
  8. all proof of damage or loss is the responsibility of the owner but i will help when i can.
  9. damage to unlisted or unknown contents is not covered.
  10. all insurance claims will be settled exclusively through BSM for like replacement or repair, no cash payments allowed for settlements.
  11. insurance does not cover the contents of any improperly packed item nor does it cover any damage caused by loose contents (you are on the hook if your bag breaks open and a cassette drops onto a bike and damages it); bags and their contents must pass the six-foot drop test.
  12. each bike must be insured separately.

should you choose to purchase optional insurance, you will be required to do the following:

  1. pay for the transport service of your choice.
  2. read and understand the contracts and this website as they relate to insurance.
  3. provide proof of ownership or legal custodialship for purchasing insurance or submitting claims.
  4. fill out additional paperwork - descriptions of the current equipment on the bike must accompany each insurance purchase along with serial numbers (frame, fork, wheels, handlebars, etc.), sizes, colors, parts/components, and model/make of bike. i must see the bike to verify the coverage but you can fill out the form in advance to speed up the process.
  5. describe condition and contents - bags may not be insured as a "bag", they must be added to a bike insurance policy. the contents of the bag must be detailed with pictures because damage to unknown and/or unlisted contents is not covered. your descriptions and equipment will be verified, accuracy is important.
  6. pictures - pictures must accompany any insurance purchase. these pictures should show the bike from every angle and any existing damage. they will be the sole proof of loss, make sure they are detailed unless you only care about the catastrophic part in which case a few wide-frame pictures of each side of the equipment will suffice. if the pictures do not clearly show the undamaged condition of the equipment prior to any losses then the claim will be denied. otherwise the pictures should show the condition of the entire bike or other equipment as claims will only be submitted if the pictures positively verify the loss.
  7. sign the insurance contract.

you must provide the necessary documentation if you elect to purchase insurance, the choice is NOT yours. i cannot accept insurance payments nor provide coverage unless everything is completed: pictures, serial numbers, model names, year of issue, components, wheels, make, model, etc. it is not my policy, i think it sucks and may prevent people from using insurance however it is coming from the powers to be. i will help as much as possible with the pictures and paperwork.

  7. treating others with kindness and respect during the entire transport
  8. always trying to give more than you expect, keep looking

Nobody's Privileges

  1. tools are NOT loaned, keep your hands out of the cookie jar
  2. labor and parts are NEVER included unless specifically and explicitly stated
  3. equipment will not be stored or transported dirty or wet, clean it or pay for cleaning
  4. returning borrowed equipment dirty - it was clean when you got it
  5. returning borrowed equipment damaged - it was functional when you got it
  6. not returning borrowed equipment - theft is a crime
  7. abusive, disrespectful, malicious, inconsiderate, or threatening behavior towards ANYONE or ANYTHING: spectators, riders, mechanics, officials, volunteers, marshals, racers, hotel front desk people, equipment, PERIOD!!! your transport and privileges may be cancelled immediately for breaching the terms of the contract.

What Is Not Included

many of you are familiar with the neutral support services i offer at races. my service and i remain the same, however the promoter is not footing the bill this time. yes, the promoter actually pays me to provide free service during your event. clearly this will be a major difference from the norm.

  1. loaner equipment - all loaner equipment will be for one race and that fee will be $10 or 10% of the retail value of the item, whichever is more. there may de a deposit required depending on the part. the user is responsible for returning it showroom clean or pays an additional amount equivalent to the rental for cleaning it. if you break or damage it, you wil have the privilege of repairing or replacing the item at wholesale cost.
  2. cleaning - i will only work on clean bikes, full pit service excluded. what is clean? think what a powerwasher would do. if mud is gonna fly everywhere it is too dirty. i could clean your bike but it would be like sending julia childs to butter toast at the local greasy spoon or using a flamethrower to light a candle, or hydraulic hammer to swat a fly, or a...you get the point. i like food and power tools and the pyromaniac in me would find a very large candle but let's not get carried away. you will pay dearly for cleaning, make no mistake about it. PLEASE don't let me clean your bike, save your money! how often do you hear a business say "DON'T GIVE ME YOUR BUSINESS!" really, anyone can clean a bike so i don't want to take time away from repairs or services that only i can do. however, the choice is yours.
  3. arguing with the terms of the contract(s) - signing and paying a deposit indicate you agree to the terms.
  4. storage, delivery, or pick-up - these are available for an extra price. aside from the basic transport, please make arrangements with me or someone else beforehand so it isn't an issue.
  5. mechanical support, repairs, parts, labor, etc. - these are available for an extra albeit reduced price.
  6. pit service for your race - SEVERELY limited resources and first-come, first-serve. pit service is dedicated so there will only be 1 guaranteed opening per race. if conditions warrant and with approval from those requesting simultaneous service, there may be up to 3 openings per race with a price adjustment. your early pit deposit will secure a mechanic but if slots are open the day of the race, by all means sign up last minute!
  7. refunds - no refunds on your non-refundable deposit. no refunds if you miss the transport deadlines before, during, or after the event. all balances are due by the posted due dates or the non-refundable deposit will be forfeited. if you can find someone to fill your spot before final payment is due there might be a partial refund. in the unfortunate event that i cancel the transport, i will happily refund all paid balances. acts of nature or other causes that force the cancellation of the event, or prevent or delay the transport may not qualify for a refund.
  8. insurance for your possessions - insurance is available for purchase at a ridiculously reasonable rate. i do not "make" money on this, i've already paid dearly for the ability to offer insurance in any capacity and the rates are jaw-dropping low! normal homeowner's or renter's insurance provides some basic coverage but their limit is far less than the value of many bikes. contact your insurance company to verify your coverage and if necessary update your policy to reflect the true value of your bicycle by "listing" it.
  9. rider transport - this is not a livery and cannot transport riders unless it's an emergency. if you need to transport your bicycle and feel you must accompany it, then we'll have to work something out. i am trying to make provisions for simple rider transport but for right now, don't plan on it.
  10. claiming your possessions with an outstanding balance - if there is an outstanding balance, it must be paid before i will release your equipment. storage fees accrue if i have to hold it outside of the established timelines.
  11. being responsible for transporting your equipment or its safety if you miss a drop-off or pick-up time - every possible consideration has been given to create a flexible and generous schedule that should be suitable for everyone.

What You Must Know

  1. no prohibited items - equipment cannot contain anything prohibited by major shipping companies or airlines. cannot contain anything prohibited by major shipping companies, airlines, law, or applicable regulations. additionally, any illegal items, drugs, alcohol, contraband, medications, chemicals, prescription medication, liquids of any type, non-factory unsealed food or nourishment, animals or plants, any second-party items, anything other than a bicycle or its immediate equipment are prohibited. a full manifesto of your equipment may be required.
NOTE: CO2 cartridges are allowed but i must know if they are present. they may be excluded if air travel is required.
  2. legal contract - this information supplements the legal contract you will be required to sign to participate in the transport program. please read both carefully and treat them accordingly.
  3. more legal stuff - it would be nice if we could spit and shake on it the old school way but there are legal forms and contracts to sign spelling everything out; please take the time to read everything so you have the knowledge to make an informed decision regarding your transport needs.
  4. acceptable bikes - transport is for traditional road or cyclocross bikes. other bikes may incur an additional fee or be denied transport.
  5. deadlines - any bike or equipment missing any drop-off or pick-up time will not be transported nor will any responsibility be taken for it.
  6. refunds - there are no refunds or substitutions for any reason including missed transports.
  7. care of your equipment - bicycles are handled by professionals with a vested interest. your bicycles will be treated with the utmost care and respect.
  8. packing your bike for transport - bicycles will be packed with protective materials which may include pipe insulation, bubble wrap, moving blankets or protective fabric, XX-heavy-duty plastic wrap, foam, styrofoam, or cardboard. bicycles will not be adjusted or disassembled for transport, how you gave it is how you get it. pedals may be removed and multi-speed bicycles may be shifted into a different gear.
  9. rack system - bicycle racks within the vehicles are custom-made for long transports, these are not off-the-shelf products. engineers have been consulted to ensure the best possible method of securing and transporting your valuable equipment.
  10. insurance - insurance takes a few minutes but worth the time and expense.
  11. storage - a schedule of your expected comings/goings or a phone call is much appreciated and will help you roll faster.
  12. your behavior - it will be monitored, show the rest of the world how well we new englanders can behave. other behaviors are not advised.

What I Would Like/Need to Know

the more i know about your schedule and plans to use my services, the better i can plan for both of us. i would like to return your equipment at the exact moment you choose. there will be many unknowns but lack of preparation is one variable that can be mostly eliminated with a little communication. it's okay if i don't know your exact plans but a quick heads up phone call would be most appreciated. there may be in excess of 100 bikes in the program, please help me help you and everyone else.

  1. NEED: time and date you will claim your equipment at the event city
  2. NEED: any expected delivery or pick-up issues with your equipment
  3. NEED: any plans to have us service the bike, store it, or clean it
  4. NEED: race schedule (and training plans if necessary)
  5. NEED: a picture of you and anyone approved to claim your equipment - this is for my transport file, to ensure a paper trail, and for security measures.
  6. pit service requirements during race if desired
  7. your travel schedule: flights, times, etc.
  8. hotel, location, and dates
  9. social security number, mother's maiden name, date of birth, bank account information, passwords...sorry, got carried away there

Your Logistic Considerations

financial considerations are certainly a HUGE factor. fortunately the figures are easy to find, easily quantifiable...here are some hard numbers:

  • driving - at 25MPG, louisville is $300+ in gas and tolls, madison is about $340; 16-18 hours to louisville, 20-22 hours to madison, plus the bike hassle
  • airplane ticket - how much inconvenience are you willing to pay for? a red-eye last-minute deal for $200 or a luxury ticket for $600?
  • airline bike transport - up to $500 per bike, EGADS!
  • shipping a bike - minimum $150 per bike
  • insurance - up to $1.70 per $100 value each way (for a $5000 bike my insurance is about 2/3 less, even better rates with more expensive bikes)
  • disassembly or re-assembly - up to $200 per bike ($50 and up each time it is assembled, disassembled, and packed - you'll need four of these per bike)
  • vehicle rental - once on-site, up to $80/day. automatic billing still forces you to lug the bike and equipment to the car though it skips waiting in long lines.

if the numbers told the whole story this transport service would be a waste of money. after speaking with every type of athlete and hearing their travel experiences, NO ONE WANTS TO FLY WITH THEIR BIKES! it's about the subjective experiences and willingness to put up with incompetence, anxiety, and a lot of unproductive time. without assigning any price, cost, or value to the following, here are some intangible but vitally important factors:

  • will your bike make a detour to india or arrive on time?
  • is your bike on time but crushed into a carry-on size?
  • how many people will handle your bike whether shipped or flown?
  • what is the aggravation of packing your bike: put it into the car; drive to the bike shop; pay to have it disassembled and boxed (doubtful that part-time teenager will handle your $15,000 bike carefully); bring it back home, put it back into the car for the airport, and repeat at least three more times for this trip alone?
  • oversized expensive cargo is a glutton for punishment, too damn bulky to handle carefully - how many times will it be thrown on a truck, stomped, banged up, dropped, or just abused?
  • how do you assign a price for the anxiety when TSA pulls a tasmanian devil on your bike box and then throws everything back in the box, carbon components be damned? the undamaged and carefully packed bike has just been pillaged and the horror story only gets worse.
  • once again, define how much fun it is to haul your bike and equipment through the airport, in and out, and then getting the huge rental car, doing the event, getting the bike all packed up again to drag it through the airport again with TSA on the prowl, wiser and looking to molest your bike....
  • still once again, just one last time, how enjoyable is it to drag your bike(s) around the airport while you arrange for transportation or that expensive SUV rental?
  • some airlines and shippers don't offer insurance. those that do generally charge more than mine.
  • how do you place a value - monetary or peace of mind - on having one of the most experienced 'cross mechanics on-site with a bunch of repair parts? or not?

a few of the smaller airlines have excellent rates. do they fly to your destination? what other important factors are ignored if price is the only consideration? apparently a bike flies for as little as $50 each way. for some airlines, a 50-pound box no bigger than 62 inches allows some creative people to stuff two bikes into a box at the $50 price. don't forget the property damage limit, your double-wide may easily exceed their insurance coverage limit.

once again, what is the value of the service they offer and how does one equate it with pricing? something as intangible and purely subjective as the amount of BS one can tolerate is awfully difficult to put into monetary terms.

Reasoning Behind the Transport

here are some statistics gathered from some market research:

  • no one would use another method of transport if my service was the same price.
  • shipping a bike was not an option for 95%+ of the people - they'd rather fly with it than ship it.
  • nearly everyone would pay a slight premium above an airline fee for this service as described.
  • more than 2/3 would pay an average of $75 above the airline fee to eliminate the hassle, a sort of peace of mind payment (some of you would like to give them a "piece of mind" payment, no doubt).
  • some would offer several hundred dollars above an airline fee just to have a very skilled mechanic at the event.

this service is not an "aside" to help pay my travel expenses. the prices are based on the mileage, food, tolls, hotel, workers, supplies, wear-and-tear to my equipment, and other expenses necessary to allow me to offer this and the additional services described herein for events of all types within the USA. it is a business and treated as such. you will receive the best value regardless of the price. this professional transport service strives to entirely remove the bike anxiety from the tortuous travel nightmare.

even at the same price as the airlines...even $75 more... just how much is your peace of mind worth? for some it is DOUBLE the airline price. eliminate the aggravation of traditional shipping methods and the broken, missing, damaged, or lost bikes. if you're devoting all this energy to one race, decide with a purposeful prudence, not reckless abandon.

while others will offer far less service and value for less money with their transports, the whole reason you're considering a transport is to avoid the hassle. is paying less really a hassle-free experience? then go ship your bike, fly with it, or pay someone else to transport it.

if you save $50 or $75 using another method of transport whether you ship it, fly it, drive it, plane it, train it, boat it, helicopter it, rent an amish wagon and some horses, how costly is that first repair in lost time, money, and uneasiness as you hunt down the local bike shop and a mechanic? i'm guessing the price difference would be wiped out and then there's the ongoing aggravation for the remainder of the event.

additionally, when people buy into my transport service they are getting something that is unparalleled in the industry. they have the full power of my resources on-site. i strive to carry most types of replacement part (i.e. a few sets of wheels, handlebars, stems, saddles, seatposts, derailleurs, shifters, brakes, cables, housings, cleats, etc.) but not every model of every kind of every material. just enough to hopefully get you through the weekend. because this trip is the most important of the year, a larger selection of tools and equipment are brought compared to my normal support gig.

and ME, the most valuable commodity this service offers!

word will eventually spread about the setup the new englanders are enjoying. others may be stopping by for a favor or repair. the discriminating and wise choice you made by purchasing a transport gives you first dibs above those that didn't. further down the food chain, new england riders will get preference before other riders. the ones with the most money always go first (just kidding, no whoring to the highest bidder).

i'm not a social media butterfly but updates are available with a quick phone call or visit to the updates section at the top of the page. i'll regularly update the scheduling and other information including the availability of pit support, "turnkey" service packages, and more.

seriously, there are so many better ways to waste time in a fascinating city like madison or louisville, why deal with your bike? wisconsin may be the dairy capital of america but it won't be deprived of a podium spot for the beer capital. kentucky will hold its own as a contender for the spirit capital.

shipping - busted bike syndrome, part I - i've worked at a large shipping company and while the majority of workers are good, that unlucky oversized could pass through 30 people's hands, see the insides of a dozen trucks, and take a few freight trains before it gets to you. too many cooks in the kitchen. or meet its match on the conveyor belt - wooden crates are transformed into mulch, a bike in a cardboard box has no chance. someone might take an exception to an oversized box or a bicycle just because it is an easy target.

airlines - busted bike syndrome, part II - if the airlines were competent everyone would want to use them. if everyone got the feeling of security and safety from the airport, maybe they'd reconsider. barring a re-writing of the lame procedures they are forced to follow - mind you, the security is pathetic even after 9/11 - the airlines can go fry some ice. off my vitriolic pulpit for more entertaining thoughts....

budget travelers - huge opportunities to save money! with a small group of friends driving down and sharing a hotel, the reduced cost and ease of the trip is almost a nobrainer. gather the masses and make block reservations at a hotel and rent a 12-passenger van for the trip. without the bikes there'd be lots of room in the car and the hotel. here is a quick rundown: bike transport for $265 (or share a bike with a friend for even more savings); your share of $350 for gas and $500 for the hotel; add car/van rental if necessary; and food. it could easily be managed for under $500 per person.

luxury travel experience - the most inclusive package would be the concierge service. it would include nightly storage and cleaning, insurance, transport for two bikes, free use of loaner parts, and more. you'd be pampered like a professional rider with a fresh bike every day, everything to make you feel like a world champion 100%! go the extra step and add the optional pre-transport pick-up and post-transport drop-off and a nightly tune-up (for a fee, this is not included) and completely ditch your bike for the duration of the transport except when you need it. once at the race, pick up the bike in the morning and bring it back at night, repeat until done. WOW!

payments received after the normal pricing deadline, even if the bike was registered before the deadline, will be subject to the appropriate late fee. PLEASE PAY BEFORE THE POSTED DEADLINE FOR YOUR CHOSEN TRANSPORT TO AVOID LATE FEES OR INCREASES IN THE NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT!

there is a final payment deadline for those with outstanding balances. your reservation may be cancelled if there is a waiting list and you have an outstanding balance. YOU MAY LOSE YOUR RESERVED SPOT IF YOUR ENTIRE PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED BY 12/27/2011, BE WISE AND PLAN AHEAD!

payment can be cash, check, or money order but do not send cash. for these three payment types, you'll get a voucher for 2% of the total registration charge for your transport (redeem for cash by 1/22/2012 or use for labor services during the trip, no value thereafter). you save me money by not using a credit card and i will gladly throw some money your way via the voucher. credit card companies have more than enough money from their business- and consumer-unfriendly practices already. don't let the old-fashioned payment types go the way of the dinosaur.

credit card and debit card processing should be ready by registration time but your card must be swiped, no phone orders. no paypal. absolutely, positively NO discounts for credit or debit cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: what if i can't claim my equipment or get it to the designated drop-off location, can someone else pick it up or drop it off for me?
A: yes, there are some options:

  1. for an additional fee, there are bike pick-up and delivery services available during the weeks of 12/27/2011 and 1/23/2012, respectively. while convenient, it must be pre-arranged. call for pricing and availability. it works best when a group of people bring their bikes to one location to help offset the additional cost (i.e. someone's house, a bike shop, or a business that is friendly to our mutual cause).
  2. you may authorize others to act on your behalf by filling in the appropriate section on the contract. they must be of legal age and present a valid ID (alternately, send a picture of them to include with your file for quick reference.) they can approve service and claim/drop-off your equipment.

Q: what if i miss a drop-off or pick-up time?
A: you're out of luck, the deadlines cannot be changed. unfortunately, your equipment will not be transported and i cannot issue a refund for a missed transport. if you miss part of the transport you are still welcome to meet with me at a future drop-off or pick-up location at the proper time and resume the transport but this will be solely at your expense.

Q: why aren't there more package deals that include the additional services?
A: research has shown that people would prefer to choose their own services instead of paying for pre-packaged services that may not be necessary or desired. the menu item approach allows you to choose only the service items you desire, thus offering the best value for your specific needs. however, two choices are offered for now, the deluxe and concierge.

Q: why doesn't insurance cover cosmetic damage except for extreme cases?
A: your equipment is being handled by professionals with a vested interest in its safety and protection. the likelihood of cosmetic damage is markedly reduced with caring hands. it doesn't eliminate the possibility but your equipment will be treated like you are a world champion every moment. i was an automobile restoration specialist; many cosmetic issues can be fixed rather easily. place a little trust in the system. you won't get that same assurance anywhere else but their lip service will certainly try to appease your anxieties. remember, it's a cyclocross bike...it will always bear scars from its racecourse adventures, there are probably many pre-existing "cosmetic" issues.

Q: is there a cancellation policy?
A: yes, but the non-refundable deposit is non-refundable. however, if you find someone to take your spot then your registration can be trasnferred for a $50 processing fee. if you purchased a double transport then your substitute must do a double transport; a single transport, it doesn't matter which one. once the trip has been completed, provided the other person has paid in full and didn't cancel their reservation, your money minus the $50 processing fee will be refunded.

Q: does a reservation made before the price increase deadline guarantee the price?
A: no, payments OR reservations made after the posted price increase day for your chosen transport will incur the late fee. the minimum deposit required to hold a reservation is equal to the non-refundable deposit based on the day of the reservation. pay early = pay normal price.

Q: what are the vouchers for?
A: vouchers may be used anytime during the transport period for labor services but not for parts. vouchers with an outstanding balance may be redeemed for cash after the trip. all vouchers issued for the transport are void and worthless on 9:00pm on 1/22/2012.

Q: what's with the GROUP bikes and reservations?
A: this encourages people to band together by offering a voucher when a certain number of bikes are registered under that GROUP; your enthusiasm for spreading the word about the transport is rewarded. you don't have to be in a GROUP but it is highly encouraged. GROUPS do not receive special treatment but only GROUPS of a pre-determined size can acquire certain vouchers. everyone is treated with the same respect and courtesy, GROUP member or not.

Q: why do you require so much information about my equipment and schedules?
A: simply to serve you better. knowing your schedule helps me plan around your needs. knowing your equipment will help me support you better - if i don't know what you use it's somewhat challenging to bring acceptable parts and equipment to support you. the information you supply is not shared, i staunchly value your privacy.
FYI - there are more than 200 rear derailleur hangers alone....

Q: how are the bikes and equipment transported?
A: it depends on how many bikes sign up for the service. a custom trailer was specifically designed to carry many bikes (yes, 100% custom, you can't buy it anywhere, it was built from the ground up just for bike transport). the bike rack system is proprietary and designed by me with the help of some engineers and transportation experts. it is modular and adjustable for any boxed vehicle. your equipment is important enough to justify the costs associated with transporting and protecting it.

Q: how can i track my bike during the transport?
A: please call the phone number for updates. if any issues or special circumstances change your plans, let me know ASAP. in the so-called information age, companies who make it impossible to navigate their websites or talk to a person are annoying. i vow to keep you as informed as you want without resorting to anti-social media outlets like failbook, twatter, and mywaste. the personal and personable relationships still have value and you are most certainly worth it!
